A redesign can improve the brand while quietly destroying years of search visibility if URLs, content and redirects are treated as an afterthought. SEO migration work should begin before the new design is finished, not after traffic disappears.

Export the URLs that currently receive impressions, clicks, backlinks or conversions. Record titles, canonicals, status codes and important internal links. This gives the redesign team a factual baseline instead of relying on memory.
Not every legacy URL needs to survive, but every important URL needs an intentional outcome: keep it, improve it, merge it, redirect it or retire it.
Use permanent redirects when content has moved. Redirect each old page to the closest meaningful destination rather than sending every retired URL to the homepage. A redirect should preserve user intent, not merely eliminate a 404.
Avoid chains where an old URL redirects to another old URL and then to the final page. One-hop redirects are easier for crawlers, browsers and future maintainers.
A visual redesign is not a reason to delete the text, FAQs, case evidence or navigation that helped a page rank. Review what the old page already answers before replacing it with a shorter design-led version.
Content can be rewritten and improved, but the new page should still satisfy the underlying query and commercial intent. Search visibility is often tied to information, not to the CSS surrounding it.
Check status codes, canonical tags, robots directives, structured data, XML sitemaps and internal links in the staging build. Prevent the staging noindex rule from accidentally following the site into production.
After launch, crawl the public site and test the highest-value old URLs individually. Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools should be monitored for unexpected coverage changes.
Compare impressions, clicks, conversions and indexed URLs against the pre-migration baseline. Some fluctuation is normal, but large drops concentrated around a section usually point to a technical or content change that can be investigated.
