A technical audit should produce a short list of problems that change crawlability, indexation, usability or measurement. Hundreds of automated warnings are less useful than a verified explanation of which issues affect real pages.

Start with the URLs that matter most. They should return the expected status code, use the preferred HTTPS hostname and avoid redirect chains. Legacy HTML paths, malformed links and obsolete templates should have intentional outcomes.
404 responses are not automatically bad; a genuinely removed page can return 404. The problem is when valuable or linked URLs disappear without a suitable replacement.
Every indexable page should have a clear canonical strategy. Self-referencing canonicals are usually appropriate for unique commercial pages, while duplicates should point to the preferred version or redirect when possible.
Check meta robots and HTTP headers for accidental noindex directives. Staging settings, old templates and utility pages are common sources of unwanted indexation rules.
The XML sitemap should contain canonical, indexable URLs that return successful responses. It should not become an archive of every URL the site has ever created.
Then compare the sitemap with the internal link graph. Important sitemap URLs should be reachable through normal navigation and contextual links, preferably within a small number of clicks from strong hub pages.
Structured data should describe visible facts accurately. Test Organization, Service, Breadcrumb and Article markup where relevant, but do not add schema types merely because a plugin offers them.
Technical quality also includes page uniqueness. Duplicate titles, empty descriptions, multiple conflicting H1s and template filler can weaken otherwise clean crawl signals.
Check mobile performance, Core Web Vitals, image delivery and script weight. Then confirm that search and conversion measurement are functioning so the team can tell whether changes improve outcomes.
